Breathing In and Out

Draw air into the lungs

Move the lever and watch the movement of the lungs and diaphragm during breathing. The lungs are a respiratory organ for gas exchange between the air and the blood. Inhalation starts with contractions of the diaphragm, to a lesser extent assisted by intercostal muscles. Exhalation is a passive action facilitated by the mass of the thorax. The gas exchange in the lungs takes place in tiny sacs ??“ the alveoli. During inhalation the alveoli fill with air. Oxygen then passes through the wall of the alveoli to the capillaries which surround the sacs. Each red blood cell takes up a certain amount of oxygen and transports it via the blood stream to the target organs. In the opposite direction, the blood cells carry carbon oxide which leaves the airways during exhalation.
