Intestines

What is the path of food in our body?

Pull out the hose representing the small intestine and watch the distance food must travel during digestion. Try to push the ball in the hose up. With a similar wave the smooth muscle shifts food in the intestines. The small intestine is approximately 5 metres long and 3 centimetres thick. Food in the digestive tract moves due to the contractions of the smooth muscle, and not by gravitation. As a result it can also move upwards.
