
Turning your phone into a microscope
Build a simple microscope using your mobile phone
Turning your smartphone into a microscope. You can easily buy the parts you need to make it, but use your own mobile.
What you need
- a smart phone
- a laser pointer
- a pair of pliers
- a piece of adhesive
- a pocket torch (or other light source)
- a square of white paper (5 x 5 cm)
- a square of transparent film (5 x 5 cm)
- a square of transparent film (1 x 1 cm)
- cups as a base
Procedure
1. First, use the pliers to take apart the laser pointer.
2. Take the little lens out of the pointer.
3. Roll out the adhesive to form a small snake.
4. Twist the snake around the lens.
5. Stick it on the lens of your smartphone.
6. Turn the torch or other light source upwards and turn it on. Put the white paper and film on it.
7. Drop a sample, such as dirty water from a puddle, onto the film.
8. Cover the sample with the transparent film.
9. Place the mobile on a suitable stand and watch!
10. Turn on the camera app. You can now zoom, photograph and explore!
