Atta Ameisen
Look inside an ant heap
Watch life in the ant heap. Ants of the genus Atta form an interesting organised system. For more than 50 million years they have lived in mutually beneficial co-existence with fungi that they cultivate themselves. Ants eat the fibres of the fungi which in return feed on the mix consisting of ant excrement, saliva and the leaves they have munched on. The result is a relatively closed ecosystem (ants, fungi and leaves), which shares many similarities with our civilisation.
