Watch how a steam engine works
Push the button to fire up the gas burner. Through an aperture you can watch the boiling water in the boiler and increasing the pressure of the steam on the display. When the pressure is high enough, push the button on the right to open the steam supply from the boiler to the steam engine that will start running. The model represents a piston engine converting the heat energy of water steam to mechanical energy. The steam from the boiler is led via the regulator to the slide valve chest from where it is dispensed to the cylinder where it makes the pistons move by its pressure. The sliding motion of the pistons is transmitted via the piston rod to a gyroscope with a crank, thus converting the sliding motion into rotary.
