Giant String

Vibrate a string and watch the waves

Turn the disc and change the tension in the string, pull the handle and notice what is happening with the string. Vibrating the string at one end produces a wave that proceeds to the other end where it is reflected and returns to the source. The result is the interference between the direct and the reflected wave. If both these waves travel at the same speed but in opposite directions they will form a standing wave. The profile of the wave on the string gives an impression of a steady state, as if the wave stood still and did not move. In a tight string we observe a crosswise standing wave that we call oscillation.
