Discover how plants are grown in glass
Many closed jars with sundews. Or one sundew in many jars?
All the plants you see were grown from a piece of a single sundew. They are therefore clones. This method is used, for example, to cultivate seedless fruit such as bananas, grapes, or melons. The journey to fruit begins in the laboratory. A whole small plant is grown in a jar from a piece of plant tissue (an explant). It grows from water and nutrients in a gel, in a sterile environment that protects it from bacteria and mould.
The exhibit was created in collaboration with Plantaxie and showcases a modern method of growing plants that produce fruit available in any supermarket. These are not genetically modified plants.
