Watch a closed ecosystem
Planet Earth is a system full of living organisms. Together with their environment these organisms form the living envelope of the Earth, the biosphere. It is divided into ecosystems of different sizes which can be open or closed. An ecosystem can be represented, for example, by a forest, a meadow, a pool or even the digestive tract of a ruminant. An open ecosystem exchanges substances, energy and information with other ecosystems. Conversely, closed ecosystems do not communicate and do not exchange any substances. And it is these ecosystems that we attempt to simulate in so-called ecospheres.
