We distinguish two types of the combustion engine ??“ the spark-ignition and the compression ignition engine. In the former a mixture of fuel and air is ignited by an electric spark usually created by a spark plug. In the latter there is spontaneous combustion of the injected fuel due to the high temperature of the compressed air. The fuel of a spark-ignition engine is petrol while the compression ignition engine is driven by diesel oil. Both engines have a two-stroke variety, where the whole working process takes place during two upstrokes of the piston, and a four-stroke type, when the working cycle is completed during four upstrokes of the piston.
