Bubble Race

Three, two, one, go!

Pump air into the cylinders and observe the speed of ascending bubbles in the individual cylinders. Air bubbles rise as they are lighter than the liquid in which they exist. To be more precise, they have a lower density. Air bubbles in the cylinders rise at different speeds. The speed is the highest in the cylinder filled with water, a little lower in the cylinder with a mixture of water and glycerol and lowest in the cylinder containing pure glycerol. This is caused by the differing viscosities of these liquids. Viscosity is the result of the action of the attractive forces in the liquids.
