Cycle of a Modern Combustion Engine

What is going on under the bonnet?

Select one of the four engines, set the animation in motion and observe the individual operation phases. We distinguish two types of the combustion engine ??“ the spark-ignition and the compression ignition engine. In the former a mixture of fuel and air is ignited by an electric spark usually created by a spark plug. In the latter there is spontaneous combustion of the injected fuel due to the high temperature of the compressed air. The fuel of a spark-ignition engine is petrol while the compression ignition engine is driven by diesel oil. Both engines have a two-stroke variety, where the whole working process takes place during two upstrokes of the piston, and a four-stroke type, when the working cycle is completed during four upstrokes of the piston.
