The term fuel denotes a substance from which energy is released by combustion or a nuclear reaction. During combustion, the chemical energy bonded in the fuel is converted to thermal energy given a sufficient supply of oxygen. These fuels are used mainly for heating or in motor vehicles. Energy from nuclear fuel is not released chemically but through nuclear reactions. Combusting different types of fuel releases different amounts of energy.
